Kawasan Falls: Badian Cebu’s Lucky Charm
It was another day, another city kind of adventure. Southern Cebu has been taking the internet by storm through its array of nature-related adventures. One of which, is the Kawasan Falls located at the southwest city known as Badian. Kawasan Falls is popular among the local and foreign travelers because of its scenic view and beautiful turquoise-painted like body of water.
We originally planned to wake up dawn of the next morning for Southern Cebu adventure (Badian’s Kawasan Falls and Oslob’s Whale shark interaction). However, we all failed to wake up on agreed time (hands down to Larsian’s BBQ haven for giving us a really good night sleep)
We just rushed to get things packed and done. Took a jeepney ride to South Bus Terminal station with our bulky baggages. I almost tripped off while out running towards the terminal.
We arrived at the South Bus Terminal station (near E-mall or Elizabeth Mall) around 7:30 am and we were lucky to have seated in a Ceres aircon bus bound to Bato via Barili (Badian Cebu). (Tip: The bus fare is around PHP 120 – PHP 150. Present your student ID if you are a student since they give a discount)
It was a 3-hour journey from the bustling main city of Cebu to Badian. During the journey, we passed through other popular cities like Carcar and Moalboal. That same time, I was craving hard for a Carcar chicharon (pork rinds) and luckily a vendor hopped on to the bus with some Carcar’s delicacies. I almost broke into tears when I finally tasted their chicharon. It had a foreign taste yet so heavenly, literally the best chicharon I’ve tasted yet!
(Tip: Buy packs of Carcar’s chicharon as pasalubong. You won’t regret it. Learn to haggle with the vendors.)
After a few hours of munching down a pack of chicharon and some napping, we finally made it to Badian around 11:35 am. We were swarmed by some
*annoying* men who were trying to lure us to hire them as guides/baggage handlers. I shook them off since I’ve read on some of the blogs that the trail is just a piece of cake and thought that we can make it through it with our stuff to Kawasan Falls.
I was wrong. I ended up asking myself, “Hey self, are we there yet?” We passed through a tourism center and paid PHP 20 each for the entrance fee. Then continued walking through the riverside trail. We passed by an age-old stone bridge which some says leads to the hydro-electric plant. Sweats were already trickling down on our faces. Maybe it was our bulky luggage that made it really difficult for us to walk although the trail is pretty well-established. That time we were about to give-up. But after 15 minutes of braving the 1.5 KM trail to Kawasan Falls we finally made it! Our hard work paid off immediately! We were stunned by the scenic site and the gushing sound of the waterfalls. The natural pool is vibrant aquamarine, it seemed artificial. No wonder Kawasan Falls is a must in every Southern Cebu itinerary.
Since it’s already past time for lunch, we ordered some rice meals from the nearby restaurant. Don’t be surprised with the establishments flocking meters away from the falls itself. I think they mean convenience to travelers but don’t be surprised too with the prices. The meals are all pricey but we still ordered some due to hunger and exhaustion. Imagine a corned beef meal would go as high as PHP 72 (still without a rice). Zero fuck was given. I forgot to take some photos of the food we ordered ’cause of hunger. Sorry not sorry.
(Tip: Buy some supplies at the cooperative store near Matutinao Church before heading to Kawasan Falls for cheaper deals. Or bring some packed lunch to save some money!)
I was informed that there are lodging options and houses available since many travelers are visiting Southern Cebu (Badian) mainly for Kawasan Falls. Here are some of the budget-friendly inns we saw around:

It was about time to take a dip into the waters so we changed to our swimming clothes at a pay bathroom meters away from the falls. At first, were having some second-thoughts about our swimming skills so we rented some life vests for PHP 100 each (Better to be safe than sorry). And then eventually we braved the refreshing ice-cold water cascading down from the boulders of Kawasan Falls. And I thought, “One of the best 20 pesos I’ve ever spent in my lifetime!”
After some time, we rented a balsa (bamboo raft) for PHP 300. We had a 30-minute ride and massage session from the waters of Kawasan Falls. Strong current of water served as our massage therapist that day. It was a pure bliss.
Other activities you could also do at Kawasan Falls is the canyoneering. This is yet the most extreme activity Southern Cebu has to offer. You may opt to go downstream canyoneering in Alegria (nearby town) to Kawasan Falls in Badian. Or if you’re up for a more challenge, go upstream canyoneering. You may want to read this article
We weren’t able to try this thing due to time constraints. However, Carlo and I look forward to be back in Southern Cebu soon to do some canyoneering and other adrenaline-pumping activities.
Eventually, it was already time to pack our things and say au revoir to the majestic Kawasan Falls. We rented habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) for PHP 50 each passenger. The ride felt like we were riding a roller coaster. It was scary but for experience-wise it was good! From Kawasan Falls (Badian Cebu), we shifted our course southward, traversed along countless seaside roads just to reach Brgy. Tan-awan, Oslob , where whale shark interaction is their pride.
Other Facilities in Kawasan Falls
- It’s a must to take a bottle of water. You can buy it in the area, but it’s a expensive move to do.
- There’s a cooperative store near the Matutinao Church. You may want to gather your supplies first before heading straight to Kawasan falls.
- Toilets are available near the church (PHP 5) and a changing/shower room (PHP 10) meters away from the waterfall.
- You can visit the restaurant at the waterfall but the prices are a bit overpriced. You may still bring some packed lunch but please be responsible for your trashes.
- There are many tables and cottages for rent price starts at PHP 300.
- Parking is available near by the Matutinao church.
- Habal-habal or motorcycle taxis are also present near the jump-off to Kawasan Falls price is PHP 50 each passenger, one-way.

Overall, I enjoyed my entire stay in Badian, Cebu. Kawasan Falls is a definite spot in Southern Cebu. The journey was one for the books. I just look forward that the people of Matutinao (Badian) will keep on taking good care of the Kawasan falls. It is true that the falls is their lucky charm. Many people have been able to find jobs and I think it is better to not take advantage of it. Although Southern Cebu is already making a hit I personally think that commercial establishments should be built away from the falls.
